Three friends, a Piper and the Italian adventure
A travel report about freedom, breathtaking Alpine panoramas and the Italian way of life
A passenger reports on three extraordinary days with D-ENBL.
Some journeys stay with you for an especially long time. Not necessarily because you travelled particularly far, but because the way there becomes the adventure itself. Ours was exactly such a journey: three friends, a four-seat Piper and the shared goal of discovering Italy from a very special perspective. That one of us was a pilot and could take us into the air in his aircraft made the whole thing an unforgettable experience.
Day 1 – By Piper to Bayreuth
Our adventure began with the flight to Bayreuth. Instead of travelling by car or train, we sat in a small Piper and experienced the world from a bird's-eye view. The flight there was already something special. The landscape below us, the feeling of freedom and the anticipation of the days to come made for a fine start to our journey.

Once in Bayreuth, we took our time to explore the town and immerse ourselves in its history. A particular highlight was the visit to the Richard Wagner house, which offered interesting insights into the life and work of the famous composer.
Afterwards we rounded off the day in a cosy brewhouse. Over Franconian specialities and regional hospitality we enjoyed the good food and shared our first impressions. All the while the anticipation grew for what awaited us the next day: a flight through the Alps all the way to Italy.
We stayed the night in Bayreuth so as to set off well rested the next morning into what was probably the most spectacular part of our journey.
Day 2 – Over the Alps to Venice
The next morning, in perfect flying weather, we finally set off south. Ahead of us lay an impressive route through the Alps, and the conditions could hardly have been better. The clear air gave us fantastic long-range visibility and let us experience the mountains in all their beauty.
Before long the mighty peaks rose up ahead of us. Deep valleys, sheer rock faces and sweeping mountain landscapes offered a panorama you can hardly experience in this way from the ground. Especially striking was flying past the Zugspitze, whose distinctive summit rose majestically into the blue sky.

During the flight we gained fascinating insights into aviation. Our pilot explained the particulars of the route, how to navigate in the mountains and the challenges that an Alpine flight brings with it. In this way the flight became not only a visual experience but also an interesting lesson about flying.

On we went along the Brenner, one of the best-known Alpine crossings. The varied landscape, the snow-capped peaks and the clear air made this stretch one of the highlights of our journey. From the small aircraft we could take in the scale of the Alps especially intensely.

Finally we reached Trento, where we made an intermediate landing. The town, set amid the impressive mountains of northern Italy, made for a welcome break before we tackled the final stretch.

Our next destination was Venice!
The onward flight finally crowned the day. The approach over the Venetian lagoon in particular was spectacular. Below us stretched shimmering water, countless little islands and the unmistakable silhouette of the historic city. To experience Venice from the air was a sight we would not forget in a hurry.

After landing we swapped the cockpit for the alleys of the lagoon city. On a long walk through town we explored the famous sights, strolled along the picturesque canals, crossed little bridges and enjoyed the unique flair of Venice. Among historic buildings, winding alleys and lively squares there was something to discover at every turn.

In the evening, Italian cuisine was of course not to be missed. Over crispy pizza and a delicious tiramisu we let the eventful day wind down. Over good food and lively conversation we enjoyed the special atmosphere of Italy and looked back on a day that, with its many impressions, would stay with us for a long time.

Day 3 – Along the coast back home
On the third day it was finally time to say goodbye to Italy. But the journey home, too, promised one more special flying experience.
We set off north and first flew along the Adriatic coast. The deep-blue sea, the varied coastline and the landscapes of northern Italy offered fantastic views from the air. Past Trieste the route led on over Slovenia and then over the Czech Republic towards home.

As the coast slowly disappeared behind us, the landscape below us changed. The sea gave way to green plains, gentle hills and wide-open country. Country by country we drew closer to our goal, and in the aircraft we let the past days pass in review once more.
We remembered the start in Bayreuth, the visit to the Richard Wagner house, the cosy brewhouse, the impressive flight past the Zugspitze and along the Brenner, the stop in Trento and finally the spectacular approach to Venice.
After three eventful days we landed back home – with many images in our heads, great stories in our luggage and the feeling of having experienced something truly special.
In closing – more than just a journey
This journey was far more than a short trip to Italy. It was a blend of friendship, adventure, culture, food and the incomparable freedom of flight.
The four-seat Piper allowed us to discover landscapes from a perspective you can hardly experience on an ordinary trip. The flight through the Alps in particular, in perfect weather and with fantastic visibility, will stay with us for a long time. The Zugspitze, the Brenner and the impressive mountains from the air were moments you do not forget in a hurry.
But it was not only the spectacular views that made this journey so special. It was also the hours spent together, the conversations in the aircraft, the Franconian food in Bayreuth, the Italian way of life in Venice and the joy of experiencing something extraordinary together.
Three friends, a Piper and three days full of unforgettable moments – a journey that showed us that it is not only the destination that counts, but also the way there. And when that way leads over the Alps, along the Adriatic coast and through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe, it becomes an adventure you can tell stories about for a long time.
Sometimes the finest part of a journey really is the way itself.
